Functional Medicine Asks Why, Conventional Medicine Asks What.
A conventional approach treats the symptom in front of you — fatigue gets a referral for a sleep study, high cholesterol gets a statin, anxiety gets an SSRI. Each symptom is handled in isolation, often by a different specialist, with limited time to dig deeper.
A functional medicine approach asks a different question: why is this happening in the first place? We look at the whole person — genetics, hormones, gut health, inflammation, lifestyle, and history — to understand what’s driving your symptoms, not just managing them.
Root causes and symptoms don’t line up one-to-one. The same root cause — say, inflammation — can show up as fatigue in one person and brain fog in another. And the same symptom can be traced back to any number of different root causes depending on the person. That’s why two people with the same complaints can need completely different treatment plans.
Neither approach is “wrong.” Conventional medicine is essential for acute illness, emergencies, and surgery. But for chronic, complex, or unexplained symptoms — the kind where you’ve been told “your labs are normal” but you still don’t feel right — functional medicine often finds answers conventional medicine doesn’t have time to look for.
