See What the Scale Can’t Show You

A clear, data-driven snapshot of your muscle, fat, and hydration levels.

The number on the scale doesn’t tell the whole story. Our SECA body composition scan gives you a detailed breakdown — muscle mass, fat mass, and hydration — so you and your provider can track real progress over time.

How Does a SECA Scan Work?

A SECA scan is a quick, non-invasive, radiation-free measurement of what your body is made of. You stand on the platform, hold two hand electrodes, and stay still for roughly 15 to 20 seconds while the device sends a low-level, imperceptible electrical current through your body and measures how different tissues resist it.

Muscle and body water conduct the current easily; fat resists it. From those signals, SECA’s validated algorithms estimate your fat mass, muscle mass, total body water, and related metrics, then present them in a report you review with your provider.
In other words, it turns a single weight number into a detailed picture of fat, muscle, and fluid, so you and your clinician can see what is actually changing.

What Is Body Composition Scan?

The SECA scan is a quick, non-invasive body composition analysis that measures more than weight alone. Results are reviewed with your provider and can be used to track progress across your care plan.

Who It’s For

  • Patients tracking progress toward weight or fitness goals
  • Anyone curious about their muscle-to-fat ratio, not just their weight
  • Patients working through a Foothills care plan who want objective data over time

Why Foothills

  • Objective data beyond a number on the scale
  • Quick and comfortable — no special prep required
  • Useful alongside any Foothills care plan for tracking progress
  • HSA/FSA accepted

The Science Behind Bioelectrical Impedance

Every tissue conducts electricity differently. Lean tissue is roughly 70 percent water and rich in electrolytes, so it lets a current pass with little resistance. Fat and bone hold far less water and impede that current more.

SECA’s medical devices send multiple frequencies of current through the body, which helps the system distinguish water held inside your cells from water held in the spaces between them. This multi-frequency approach is more sophisticated than the single-frequency estimate a smart scale makes, and it is one reason SECA results correlate closely with reference methods in published validation studies.

The output is a detailed breakdown rather than a single estimate, and it can include a phase-angle reading, a marker many clinicians associate with cellular health and nutritional status.

Who Should Consider a Body Composition Scan?

A body composition scan may be helpful for almost anyone who wants objective data instead of guesswork. It can be particularly useful during medical weight loss, since it helps show whether you are losing fat rather than valuable muscle, a real consideration with GLP-1 therapies like semaglutide and tirzepatide.

It is equally relevant for anyone focused on strength, hormone optimization, or longevity. Tracking muscle mass over time gives men and women on hormone therapy or a training program a concrete measure to follow, and it can help flag the age-related muscle loss (sarcopenia) that preventive care aims to address.

If you are simply health-curious and want a smarter baseline than BMI, a body composition scan is a useful first data point. It pairs naturally with lab work and a broader longevity assessment. Whether it is right for you is best determined with your provider.

What to Expect During a SECA Scan

The scan itself takes under a minute. To get a clean baseline, we generally ask that you arrive well-hydrated, avoid heavy exercise and alcohol beforehand, and remove shoes and socks so the electrodes make good contact.

You will step onto the platform, grip the handholds, and hold still while the device completes its measurement. Your results are ready moments later.

What sets the experience apart is the conversation that follows. Rather than handing you a printout, a Foothills Functional Medicine provider interprets your numbers in the context of your goals, your labs, and your history, then helps you translate that data into an individualized plan.
